Lahaina is a former whaling port and is known for its views and its history; in fact, it’s charming nature is preserved as a National Historic District (Lahainaluna High School was the first school built west of the Rockies in the USA). Lahaina offers great restaurants, bars, an outlet mall, boutiques, supermarkets, theaters and much more to offer, including a very busy harbor for excellent sport fishing, diving, whale watching and the ferry to Lanai. It’s a great, sunny destination for those who want to live the island life, but do not want to leave the creature comforts of living outside of the ‘city’. RE/MAX Island Properties and the Barry Brown Team’s office is proudly based in Lahaina. There are three oceanfront resort condominiums in Lahaina and several residential condominiums with prices ranging from $230,000 to over $3,000,000. The local residential neighborhood properties are priced from $500,000, all the way up to over $10,000,000 for amazing oceanfront real estate along Front Street. Also, just south of Lahaina are the wonderful residential neighborhoods of Launiupoko, Puunoa and Olowalu, with custom ocean view homes on 1/2 acre to large acreage lots priced from around $1,000,000 for 2 bedroom “cottages” to over $13,000,000 for a 6 bedroom, 52 acre estate.
Kaanapali is the world’s first planned destination resort and lies just a few minutes north of Lahaina. Historically famous Black Rock (which offers excellent snorkeling, and for the adventurous, cliff diving) separates the two long stretches of sandy beach, a half dozen high end hotels, and some of the world’s most popular and successful resort condominiums, ranging in price from $300,000 for a studio to over $5,000,000 for a luxury 3 bedroom residence. Just above the resort lie several residential neighborhoods, many of which are second homes to world wide owners—Kaanapali Hillside, the gated Kaanapali Golf Estates, the Summit, the Pinnacle, and most recently Lanikeha—with home prices ranging from $1,000,000 to over $5,000,000. In addition, there are two fantastic golf courses and dozens of great restaurants within walking distance of the hotels, condominiums and homes. Kaanapali is perfect for those who are looking for fun in the sun, surf and sand on Maui.
Honokowai, Mahinahina, Kahana, and Napili
Just north of Kaanapali, and before you reach Kapalua, are the neighborhoods of Honokowai, Mahinahina, Kahana, and Napili, each with a wide range of low and high-rise condominiums (at a wide range of nightly rates) stretched along the beautiful coastline and accessed by the meandering Lower Honoapiilani Road. While most were built in the 70’s and 80’s, the various Homeowner Associations have kept them well maintained, and many of the individual condominium owners have made significant interior renovations.Together they offer something for everyone’s taste and budget, with condominium prices ranging from $100,000 to over $1,500,000. The neighborhoods also enjoy a vast range of residential homes, from under $500,000 for ‘entry level’ homes on small lots in Napili, to under $1,000,000 for nice homes in Kahana Ridge, to $20,000,000 for brilliant oceanfront estates.
At the North end of West Maui lies the Kapalua, a Rockefeller built resort hosting the Ritz Hotel and the Montage Kapalua Bay Resort and Spa, both high end destinations for those who only seek the best in quality and service. They are complimented by award winning restaurants, two amazing golf courses, five luxury condominium resorts, and the gated residential communities of Pineapple Hill, the two+ acre Kapalua Plantation Estates, and exclusive, oceanfront Kapalua Place. All offer close proximity to three world-class beaches and stunning ocean views. Condominiums range in price from $550,000 in Kapalua Golf Villas to $8,500,000 at the Montage, and homes from $2,000,000 in Pineapple Hill to $20,000,000 on Kapalua Place.
Finally, the area just north of Kapalua, including beautiful Honolua Bay (with excellent snorkeling and world-class surfing) and for miles north along the stunning coastline, was recently been purchased by the State to be held in perpetuity as open space; think Big Sur in a tropical setting. You’ll love the drive from Kapalua around the north end of Maui, with scenic vistas, dramatic blowholes, and quaint Kahakaloa town along the way back to Wailuku and Kahului in Central Maui—though some exciting one-lane cliffside portions of the road aren’t for the faint of heart!
